Since Reishi Kusaka received the grand prize in Mainichi Contemporary Art Exhibit in 1998, he has been presenting a series titled "Traces" in which he deals with rectangular forms in black against white background. On the two-dimensional surface, he places several layers of acrylic paints so that the straight edges become blurred. Thus, the viewer is unable to focus his vision on the rectangular forms but is forced to see the blurred contour lines. He uses this effect as his own artistic expression. Then, he changed his main motif from rectangular forms to a series of "lines." @In 2003, he began adding colors to these line compositions. In 2004, he further explored the possibility of a grid design and lines. |
